Armed man in ski mask tries to rob 3 men in Chicago, but one pulls out a gun and puts him in critical condition, police say

Three men were accosted early in the morning by a masked man who intended to rob them, but one of them pulled out a gun and put the suspect in the hospital, Chicago police said.

The incident unfolded at about 3:33 a.m. on Wednesday on the 2600 block of West Devon on the Far North Side.

The three men, aged 26, 31, and 33 years old, said the suspect approached them while wearing a ski mask and demanded that they hand over their possessions after flashing his gun.

Instead, one of the intended victims pulled out a gun and shot at the man, hitting him in the chest and grazing him in the head.

The shooter was licensed to carry a concealed weapon.

Police said the injured suspect then ran into an alley at the 2600 block of West Rosemont, where they found him. He was treated by EMS and transported to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston where he is in critical condition.

Investigators said they found a handgun in a trashcan near where the man was apprehended.

None of the intended victims were injured.

Fox News Digital reported that there have been at least 44 incidents where a licensed gun owner or a concealed carry holder stopped a crime or an attack with a gun between 2020 and February 2023 in Chicago.

In one such incident, a mother was being assaulted by a man at a hot dog stand when her son used her gun to shoot and kill the man. Initially, they were charged with murder, but those charges were dropped and they have filed a lawsuit against the city.
