Chuck Schumer and Trump feud over the State of the Union speech before it's even been given
February 05, 2019
They're throwing jabs over a speech about unity
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) criticized the State of the Union before President Donald Trump gave the speech on Tuesday, and the president fired back via his Twitter account.
The speech is expected to hit on themes of bipartisanship and a call for standing beyond contentious political disagreements, but the leading Democrat and the president didn't live up to that high standard of behavior.
"The President will say the state of our union is strong but the American people know the truth, unfortunately it is not," said Schumer in a ten minute long barrage of criticisms on the Trump administration. He accused the Trump administration of being in "chaos" and offered several examples.
"The state of our union is in need of drastic repair," he added.
The president fired back from his Twitter account.
I see Schumer is already criticizing my State of the Union speech, even though he hasn't seen it yet," the president tweeted.
"He's just upset that he didn't win the Senate, after spending a fortune, like he thought he would," Trump chided. "Too bad we weren't given more credit for the Senate win by the media!"
Schumer responded by mocking the president back and citing his own speech.
"Thanks for watching my speech but you must have missed this line," Schumer tweeted. "Even more empty than his policy promises are President Trump's calls each year for unity."
Several Democratic members of Congress also have declined to attend the State of the Union speech, with Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) remarking that no one should even watch the event on television.
Controversy is also marring the response to the State of the Union by his political opponents. While Democrats are having failed Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams give their official response, the choice by Independent Senator Bernie Sanders (Ver.) to give his own response has led to accusations of racism and sexism.
