Social media melts down after claim of cops shooting a 13-year-old during rioting. Police say it was a 34-year-old armed gunman who had just shot someone.

Facts matter

The New York Police Department has been under fire all across social media for the last several days after reports circulated claiming that officers fatally shot a 13-year-old boy 19 times during street protests.

The department, however, says that the reports are simply untrue — and that the suspect they shot was a 34-year-old ex-convict who was reportedly armed and dangerous.

What are the details of the shooting?

The hashtag "19Times" began trending on social media Tuesday, with users insisting that an officer shot a young teenage male during a protest-related standoff.

The rumors began persistently circulating, and so police were forced to clear up the reports with facts.

On Tuesday, NYPD Chief Terence Monahan said that the officer-involved-shooting did not occur because of the protests, and that the now-deceased suspect was not a 13-year-old boy — but a 34-year-old man.

According to police, officers responded to a call in Brooklyn and found a man who had been shot. Officers began immediately searching and discovered the 34-year-old suspect hiding behind a fence.

The unnamed suspect reportedly engaged in a standoff with officers. Monahan said that police repeatedly demanded the suspect drop his weapon for at least a whole minute.

"He had a gun in his hand. They saw it," Monahan said during televised remarks. "The officers gave orders for the male to drop the weapon. We hear the officers for over a minute — 'He's moving his hands, he's getting up. He's gonna go. He's gonna go. Please drop the gun! Please drop the gun!'"

The suspect apparently refused, and police began firing. There were reportedly 10 officers on the scene, and each one of them fired, Monahan said.

An illegal handgun was reportedly discovered at the scene. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. His victim was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and is expected to recover.

In a statement shared to Twitter, Monahan wrote, "This is inaccurate information. The armed man who was shot by police was 34-years-old and had just shot another man."
