Amid Israel-Hamas war, some Democrats press Biden admin to call for ceasefire

Amid the Israel-Hamas war, a group of House Democrats is pushing a resolution that calls for the Biden administration to press for a ceasefire.

The resolution declares that the House of Representatives "urges the Biden administration to immediately call for and facilitate deescalation and a cease-fire to urgently end the current violence." The resolution also "calls upon the Biden administration to promptly send and facilitate the entry of humanitarian assistance into Gaza."

Israel is waging war against Hamas in response to brutal attacks perpetrated by terrorists who kidnapped some and slaughtered others in the Jewish state. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said that the country "will obliterate Hamas."

"I am grieving for every Palestinian, Israeli, and American life lost to this violence, and my heart breaks for all those who will be forever traumatized because of it. War and retaliatory violence doesn't achieve accountability or justice; it only leads to more death and human suffering," Democratic Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri said, according to a press release.

The resolution "calls for de-escalation and an immediate ceasefire in Israel and Occupied Palestine, and for humanitarian assistance to urgently be delivered to the 2.2 million people under siege and trapped in Gaza," Bush said in the statement. "The United States bears a unique responsibility to exhaust every diplomatic tool at our disposal to prevent mass atrocities and save lives. We can't bomb our way to peace, equality, and freedom. With thousands of lives lost and millions more at stake, we need a ceasefire now."

The press release indicates that lawmakers supporting the resolution include Democratic Reps. Bush, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, André Carson of Indiana, Summer Lee of Pennsylvania, Delia C. Ramirez of Illinois, Jamaal Bowman of New York, Bonnie Watson Coleman of New Jersey, Jesús García of Illinois, Jonathan Jackson of Illinois, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, and Nydia Velázquez of New York.
