Houston attorney sentenced to 180 days behind bars for spiking wife's drinks with abortion-inducing drugs

A lawyer in Houston has reportedly been sentenced to 180 days in jail and 10 years of probation after slipping his wife abortion-inducing drugs after finding out about her third pregnancy, according to the New York Post.

Mason Herring, 39, pleaded guilty Wednesday to assault of a pregnant woman and injury to a child. Herring — who is the founder and managing partner of the Herring Law Firm — had originally been charged with felony assault to induce abortion.

The Associated Press reported that Catherine Herring, who has since filed for divorce, said Mason's jail sentence was not long enough. She said their one-year-old daughter was born around 10 weeks early and has experienced development issues. The child also attends therapy eight times per week.

“I do not believe that 180 days is justice for attempting to kill your child seven separate times,” Catherine said.

The couple attended marriage counseling to try to repair their relationship when Catherine revealed she was pregnant with their third child.

However, Mason did not take the news well. He reportedly became romantically involved with a co-worker and told Catherine that the pregnancy "would ruins his plans and make him look like a jerk," according to an affidavit, per the Post.

In May 2022, Catherine told the authorities that Mark started telling her about the importance of staying hydrated. That is when he began offering her cloudy water, which he said was because the cup or water pipes were dirty.

Consequently, she became very ill, experiencing severe bleeding and cramps. She ultimately went to the hospital, but physicians could not seem to figure out what was wrong. The Associated Press reported that Catherine became suspicious and stopped drinking other beverages Mark offered her.

Later on, she discovered a package in the trash for a drug that contained misoprostol, which is used to induce abortion, per the report. She went on to provide authorities with footage from hidden cameras she had placed around the house, where Mark was no longer living.

One of the videos showed Mark appearing to mix a substance into one of Catherine's drinks.

Dan Codgell, Mason's attorney, said that the plea deal was a reasonable solution to the debacle. "It's a sad situation and Mason has accepted his responsibility."
