Judge hits Trump and his attorney with nearly $1 million in sanctions over 'completely frivolous' lawsuit against Hillary Clinton

A judge issued a scathing ruling ordering former President Donald Trump and his attorney to pay $1 million for abusing the court system with a lawsuit against Hillary Clinton and others.

Judge John Middlebrooks in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida issued a scathing ruling criticizing Trump and his attorneys for filing the lawsuit.

"This case should never have been brought," wrote Middlebrooks. "Its inadequacy as a legal claim was evident from the start. No reasonable lawyer would have filed it. Intended for political purpose, none of the counts of the amendment complaint state a cognizable legal claim."

The 108-page lawsuit was filed in March and alleged that Clinton and others had smeared Trump in order to try to rig the 2016 election. Trump sought $72 million in damages.

"In the run-up to the 2016 Presidential Election, Hillary Clinton and her cohorts orchestrated an unthinkable plot – one that shocks the conscience and is an affront to this nation’s democracy," the lawsuit read. "Acting in concert, the Defendants maliciously conspired to weave a false narrative that their Republican opponent, Donald J. Trump, was colluding with a hostile foreign sovereignty.”

The judge dismissed the lawsuit in September "with prejudice," meaning Trump cannot refile the complaint.

Middlebrooks accused Trump of being a "mastermind of strategic abuse of the judicial process" in the ruling.

"Thirty-one individuals and entities were needlessly harmed in order to dishonestly advance a political narrative. A continuing pattern of misuse of the courts by Mr. Trump and his lawyers undermines the rule of law, portrays judges as partisans, and diverts resources from those who have suffered actual legal harm," he continued.

Other defendants named in the lawsuit were former FBI officials James Comey, Andrew McCabe, Peter Strzok, Lisa Page, former DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Clinton campaign manager John Podesta, and Christopher Steele, the author of the infamous "Trump dossier."
