Male caretaker jailed after raping, sexually assaulting dementia patients in two different care homes

A care worker from Cheltenham, England was reportedly arrested and jailed after he allegedly filmed himself raping, sexually abusing elderly women with various mental disorders in two different care homes.

Teo-Valentin Todorovits, 23, apparently targeted an unknown number of "helpless" female victims over the course of three years while they were under his care. Many of the man's victims suffered from mental disorders, including dementia, and were unable to report his behavior, per the Independent.

Todorovits was ultimately caught after a used condom was discovered at his workplace. He later pleaded guilty to 12 counts of sexual assault, rape, voyeurism, and neglect.

There have only been two victims identified after the suspect took photos and recorded videos of the assaults. The victim's families have characterized the situation as "devastat[ing]" and a "gross abuse of mistrust," per the report.

The revelations of Todorovits was reported earlier this year after three police officers were under investigation for reportedly failing to look into reports of alleged rape and sexual assault.

Todorovits has reportedly been sentenced to 24 years in jail for his "shocking, vile and depraved" crimes. He is also expected to serve an additional six years on extended license.

Judge Christopher Morgan said “I have no doubt in my mind he targeted people he knew would have no ability to stop him or to report him."

The report stated that Todorovits had been hired at the first care home from June 2020 to April 2021. It was during this time that he sexually assaulted seven elderly residents. His crimes came to light in March 2021, when other staff at the care home discovered a used condom in the facility's corridor.

“That discovery was plainly unusual, to say the least, and of immediate concern to staff,” prosecutor Stephen Rose KC said.

“Police were informed and the investigation led to members of staff providing elimination DNA samples. His sample was found to match the DNA profile inside the condom,” he added.

But it was not until October 2022 that Todorovits was caught, when police officers reportedly arrested him at Luton airport. At this time, he had already been hired at a second care home, where he sexually abused a number of unidentified elderly women. He had also filmed many of these assaults.

When he was initially interviewed by the authorities, he claimed that the condom had been planted there in order to get him in trouble.

However, in a subsequent interview, he admitted that he had sexually touched a number of elderly women for his own gratification, and that he had raped one of them.

“They were helpless in the hands of this defendant," Rose said. "We note the advanced age, mental and physical frailty and the dependency of the victims on the staff at the care home, of which the defendant was one of them.”

One of the victim's families said that her loved one is now wary of both male staff members and residents. They characterized the victim as "angry" and "fearful."

“The guilt is unbearable,” a relative said. “She asked for help and we thought it was the dementia. This is why you preyed on her, because she couldn’t tell. You are sick.”

“The families find it impossible to comprehend that anyone could treat their loved ones in the fashion that has been described in this case,” the judge said.
