DHS secretary confronted with impeachment news at the same time he blames Republicans for border crisis

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas was confronted Wednesday about formal plans to impeach him just as he was blaming Republicans for the border crisis.

During an interview on MSNBC, Mayorkas was asked how the Biden administration will respond to Democratic mayors who are demanding the federal government step in and help them address migrant crises in their sanctuary cities. The secretary, however, responded by attacking Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R).

"We have taken action on the border, and we’ve taken action with respect to the challenges that cities across the country are facing," Mayorkas said without naming a single "action."

"Let me let me identify one fundamental problem here," he continued, "and that is the fact that we have one governor in the state of Texas who is refusing to cooperate with other governors and other local officials and coordinate efforts to address a challenge that this country should stand united to address.

"And it's a remarkable failure of governance to refuse to cooperate with one’s fellow local and state officials," Mayorkas claimed.

But just as Mayorkas failed to provide a single example of the "action" the Biden administration has taken to stymie the border crisis, he didn't provide a single example of Abbott "refusing to cooperate" with other governors and federal officials to handle the border crisis.

Mayorkas went on to blame the Trump administration for the growing backlog of migrants who will wait years before their asylum cases are heard in an immigration court.

At the same time that Mayorkas was abdicating any responsibility for the border crisis, MSNBC host Willie Geist confronted Mayorkas with news that broke around the same time as the interview: the House Homeland Security Committee is moving forward with efforts to impeach Mayorkas for his role in the border crisis.

"I know you have to run, Mr. Secretary, quickly before you do. We’re just getting news this morning from Punchbowl News that the House Homeland Security Committee is formally moving ahead with impeachment proceedings against you with the first hearing to be held a week from today," Geist informed Mayorkas.

Mayorkas responded that he will cooperate with the inquiry. The first full committee hearing for the impeachment proceedings will take place next Wednesday, Jan. 10.
