Ronna McDaniel to step down from RNC chairwoman role, NYT reports

Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel has informed former President Donald Trump that she plans to leave the role after the South Carolina Republican presidential primary later this month, the New York Times reported, citing two individuals acquainted with the plans.

While former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is still running against Trump in the GOP presidential primary, it appears that Trump will easily lock up the party's 2024 presidential nomination.

During an interview when Maria Bartiromo of the Fox Business Network and Fox News Channel asked Trump how McDaniel is performing, Trump said, "I think she did great when she ran Michigan for me. I think she did OK initially in the RNC. I would say right now," he continued, "they'll probably be some changes made."

"In my successful run in 2016, the State of Michigan really came through - First time in Decades that it was won by a Republican, and it was headed up by my friend Ronna McDaniel. Ronna is now Head of the RNC, and I'll be making a decision the day after the South Carolina Primary as to my recommendations for RNC Growth," Trump wrote in a Monday Truth Social post.

While interviewing Trump, Rob Schmitt of Newsmax suggested that the RNC has had issues with fundraising and election performance and asked Trump whether it is time for McDaniel to depart from her post. "Well I think she knows that. I think she understands that," Trump responded.

McDaniel, who is a niece of U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah, has been serving as RNC chair since 2017.
