Minnesota twins accused of swapping places charged with killing 2 Amish children after smashing into carriage

Identical twins in Minnesota reportedly swapped places after one of them was driving high on a rural highway and smashed into an Amish carriage, killing two children in the process, according to the New York Post.

The authorities spent months building the case before finally announcing charges. However, one expert suggested that the evidence provided may not be as strong as originally thought. Prosecutors now alleged that Samantha Jo Peterson was behind the wheel when the crash occurred on September 25, 2023.

Her vehicle slammed into the back of a carriage, killing two children and injuring two others. Sarah Beth Peterson, Samantha's sister, allegedly took responsibility for the wreck and claimed to be behind the wheel when the incident happened.

The reason Sarah took the blame for what her sister Samantha allegedly did was because Samantha was driving without insurance and with an expired driver's license at the time of the crash.

As a result of the crash, 7-year-old Wilma Miller and 11-year-old Irma Miller were killed, and two of their siblings, ages 9 and 13, were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries.

Sheriff John DeGeorge said that "Sarah was on scene a short time before our first deputy arrived. That allowed them [the twins] to come up with this story where Sarah would take responsibility for the crash and start to mislead the investigation from that very point."

"As the days continued beyond that first day where the crash was reported, inconsistencies started to appear in both sisters' stories and in the evidence that the deputies uncovered," DeGeorge said, according to CBS News.

"Later, it was determined through a series of search warrants, interviews, analysis of different data that in fact Samantha Peterson, Sarah's twin sister, was driving that vehicle."

Additionally, it was found that Samantha was high on drugs when she crashed into the Amish carriage and was afraid she would go to prison if she admitted to the incident.

Sarah was charged on Wednesday with 16 felonies, including aiding an offender, criminal vehicular operation, and vehicular homicide. The charges brought against her indicate that she tried to conceal or take responsibility for what her sister Samantha did.

Samantha was charged with 21 felonies, including vehicular homicide, criminal vehicular operation, driving under the influence, failure to provide proof of insurance, careless driving, and speeding.

Sarah could face up to five years in prison, and her sister Samantha could face up to 10 years in prison if she is convicted.
