New 'queer' middle school offers 'safe' space for LGBT-identifying students — Arizona's taxpayer-funded voucher program covers tuition

A new "queer" middle school is opening in Phoenix, Arizona, this upcoming school year that plans to provide LGBT-identifying students as young as 10 years old with a "safe, educational space."

Queer Blended Learning Center, supported by Arizona's taxpayer-funded voucher program, will open its doors to students from 10 to 14 years old this August.

Schools officials noted that the cost of tuition matches the state's voucher amount — up to $7,000 — and that parents would not be required to cover any out-of-pocket costs to enroll their children.

The micro-school is located in downtown Phoenix at the headquarters of one∙n∙ten, an Arizona-based nonprofit dedicated to serving LGBT youth from 11 to 24 years old.

"From weekly discussion groups to fun, social networking events, we create a safe space, mentally and physically, for youth of all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. We also offer resources to promote healthy choices and living," the group's website states.

Nate Rhoton, one∙n∙ten CEO, told AZFamily, "Today, if I were in junior high, I would love to be able to live my full, authentic self."

According to Darla Baquedano, the director of education for Spark Community Schools, approximately a half-dozen students have already enrolled at the micro-school, which plans to have a 1 to 12 teacher-student ratio.

Baquedano told the Arizona Republic that students will start the school year by learning about problem-solving and conflict resolution.

"We know that throughout the rest of the day, they might encounter situations where they'll need to use those skills," she said.

Core subjects, including reading, writing, math, and science, will be taught through an online homeschool program.

"Spark Community Schools' classrooms accommodate 10-12 students who are grouped and learn with others in above and below grades," the school's enrollment form stated. "Spark Community Schools are rigorous and follow state standards in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. Every student learns at their own pace, while being supported by the classroom instructor."

"We will create a safe, educational space at one∙n∙ten where students will be honored and valued," it continued. "Through a mixture of technology, teacher magic, and community building, students will excel personally and academically."

Jason McIntosh, a Queer Blended Learning Center teacher, will instruct students daily on LGBT+ history, a curriculum created by the New York Department of Education.

Baquedano explained that students will "see themselves reflected in" the lesson plans as it "highlights different significant historical figures in the LGBTQ+ community."

"We thought that that was very important," she added.

Clayton Davenport, one•n•ten's director of development and marketing, told the Arizona Republic, "We just had this population of sixth, seventh and eighth graders that could really benefit from a safe space to be able to really have exceptional education while also having education that pertains to their own identity."

"Being able to raise their hands and ask their questions in a safe, affirming environment is going to be key to their mental health and educational advancement," Davenport added.
