NYC subway passenger harasses riders, punches woman in face — then man with her fatally stabs attacker in chest, police sources say

A New York City subway passenger was harassing fellow riders and even punched a woman in the face before the man who was with her fatally stabbed the attacker in the chest, police sources told the New York Post.

What are the details?

The sources told the paper that the 36-year-old passenger was bothering other commuters aboard a northbound J train approaching Marcy Avenue in Brooklyn's Williamsburg neighborhood Tuesday evening.

Then he approached a man and woman and started arguing with them, sources told the Post, adding that the passenger punched the woman in the face.

With that, sources told the paper that the 20-year-old man who was with her knifed the attacker in the chest.

The wounded passenger stumbled out of the train to the platform, sources noted to the Post.

Officers responded to a 911 call about the stabbing just after 8 p.m., police told the paper, which added that emergency personnel rushed the wounded passenger to Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Sources told the Post that the couple stayed on the train, after which police tracked them down at the Chauncey Street station.

The man and woman initially were taken into custody as “persons of interest,” but the woman — whose age is unclear — was later released, police told the paper Wednesday morning.

The Post — citing police — said the man wasn't immediately charged, pending police conferral with the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.

The fatally stabbed passenger hasn't been identified, pending family notification, the paper said.

Police told WABC-TV they are reviewing cellphone videos of the passenger allegedly harassing subway riders as the train traveled from Manhattan to Brooklyn. The station added that videos appear to the show the man who allegedly stabbed him trying to calm down the passenger.

Police added to WABC that the folding knife used was recovered in the man's possession and that charges against him are pending.

Anything else?

The Post said the fatal stabbing comes about two months after Daniel Penny placed Jordan Neely in a deadly choke hold after Neely was causing trouble aboard a Manhattan train.

Penny — who was charged with manslaughter and is free on $100,000 bail, the paper reported — said in a recent interview he believes Neely “would have killed somebody” had he acted on the threats he yelled at passengers.
