Florida man shot by homeowner after allegedly attacking his wife then trying to break into second home, according to witnesses

A man allegedly attacked a Florida homeowner's wife in front of her home and then tried to break into another home after being shot by the victim's husband, according to police and eye witness accounts from neighbors.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a call about a burglary at a residence on Bath Club Boulevard North in North Redington Beach around 3:23 a.m. on Wednesday morning. They found a man with a gunshot wound in the middle of the street and he was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injures.

Police did not release additional information about the shooting or alleged home invasion, but neighbors told WFLA-TV that the man had been bleeding profusely after being shot by a homeowner in the neighborhood.

“I heard the screaming and the yelling, and then I heard the gunshot,” John Paul McCarthy said. “I couldn’t distinguish the glass breaking and all that, it was just commotion.”

The man allegedly attacked the homeowner's elderly wife, who yelled for her husband's help.

“Came out of the bedroom and shot him,” McCarthy said. “Then he was screaming.”

After being shot, the man allegedly grabbed a rock and tried to break into a second home, according to neighbors. They said he tried to crack a window at the home with the rock, but it didn't shatter because it was built to withstand hurricanes.

“I see him going up the street in pain screaming and yelling and finally the police showed up,” McCarthy continued. “We’ve lived on this street since 1969, and this is a first for commotion on the street.”

WFLA reported that police had not released the suspect's identity and had not said what criminal charges he might face.
