Republicans accuse Democrats of this poison pill 'stunt' after closing in on immigration compromise

Democrats are asking to severely hamstring ICE

Republicans are accusing Democrats of pulling a stunt to insert a poison pill into the negotiations over the budget and immigration after getting close to a compromise to keep the government open.

Democrats were heading toward an agreement that would provide for $2 billion in border security funding when they made a demand that Republicans were unable to stomach, according to Fox News.

"Some House Democrats are risking a second partial government shutdown by calling for this absurd last minute poison pill," said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on the floor of the Senate.

Republicans say that Democrats have asked for a cap on Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention beds. This would undercut ICE efforts to detain the more than 22 million estimated illegal aliens in the United States.

"The new demand is really extreme," explained McConnell. "A hard statutory cap on the number of illegal immigrants who can be detained by the federal government. This would result in the release of thousands of criminal aliens, and our inability to detain thousands more criminal aliens whom our federal and state law enforcement authorities will apprehend."

If there isn't a deal reached, the government will shut down again on Friday night.

The government experienced the longest partial shutdown in U.S. history after the president and the Democrats were unable to reach an agreement on the border wall. Trump relented and agreed to a temporary funding bill.
