University offers 'Unconditional Love Fund' exclusively for 'LGBTQIA2S+' students

A major state university has created a fund that is available exclusively to students who do not identify as heterosexual and/or who may be confused about their gender.

Michigan State University has announced that it now offers an "Unconditional Love Fund" for "LGBTQIA2S+" students who may encounter "extraordinary and unexpected financial hardships associated with their sexual and/or gender identity" during their time in East Lansing, Michigan. Though the university did not specify what sort of "financial hardships" may arise as a result of "sexual and/or gender identity," it did state that the funds will be given to assist with "health, wellness, and safety."

According to the website for the fund, students who claim identity among the nebulous collective "LGBTQIA2S+" can submit one application for up to $500 each semester, meaning that they can receive up to $1,000 total each academic year. To apply, students must fill out a brief form, which includes a space for personal pronouns and prompts applicants to explain their financial need. The university does warn prospective applicants that they may be required to show "documentation" — such as "bills, receipts, invoices" — to support their claim.

The awarded funds do "not need to be repaid," the university claimed.

A quick search of Michigan State's website reveals that the school offers many "emergency fund" opportunities and designates them for particular groups of students, including those studying communication arts and science, agriculture, arts and letters, business, engineering, and nursing. There are also funds designated for graduate students, honors college students, students who are parents, and international students. In April 2020, the school also established a general fund for all students who experienced hardship on account of COVID-19.

However, non-heterosexual students and those who claim aberrant gender identities seem to have more resources available to them. MSU has its own Gender and Sexuality Campus Center, which offers endowments for many different sex- and gender-related projects and programs. In June 2022, the center even hosted a 5K event to raise money for the "Unconditional Love Fund," which it sponsors.

A student identified only as "Strychnine" claimed that MSU's GSCC was helpful to Strychnine during a particularly rough time. "I was able to find a safe haven in the midst of the storm," Strychnine said of GSCC.

Campus Reform, which first reported the story about the "Unconditional Love Fund" on Tuesday, shared a comment issued by the university: "The Unconditional Love Fund is utilized by the Gender and Sexuality Campus Center to support students who are facing personal and financial hardships. By accessing the fund, students can receive the support they need to continue to thrive." Michigan State’s GSCC did not respond to requests for comment, the outlet stated.
