YouTube Kids defends videos featuring drag queens, LGBT+ content targeting children

YouTube Kids, a children's streaming service, hosts over 100 videos with drag queens, LBGT+ themes, or gender and sexuality content targeting children, Fox News Digital reported.

In order to use YouTube Kids, parents must first create an account for their children. The platform allows parents to control and limit the types of content that can be viewed. It also keeps track of every video a child has watched.

Once signed in, the homepage displays videos on several topics, including DIY crafts, shows, music, and gaming. After a child starts streaming content, YouTube Kids recommends other similar videos.

According to Fox News Digital, over 120 videos on the platform focused on gender and sexuality, most of which were uploaded by the channel "Queer Kids Stuff."

A supposedly kid-friendly YouTube channel, "Queer Kids Stuff," teaches children about various gender and sexual identities in videos such as "L is for Lesbian," "I is for Intersex," and "T is for Transgender."

In one video titled "Meet a Queer Kid," the channel's talking teddy bear speaks with "Desmond is Amazing," a child who describes himself as an LGBT+ activist, a drag kid, and a public figure. The child explains that he started performing drag when he was two years old after watching an episode of the television show "RuPaul's Drag Race."

"HiHo Kids," another YouTube Kids channel, has videos introducing children to a drag queen and a "gender non-conforming" person.

One video on the platform discussed the 2016 election, where the host addressed children who feel "scared" or "confused" about Donald Trump winning the presidency.

"I want to tell you the truth," the host stated. "Donald Trump can be a mean person. The grown-ups who voted for him, they can be mean too. And the truth is they probably will not stop being mean anytime soon."

Additional videos available on the platform include "LGTQ+ Representation in Kid's Media is Important," "What Is Transitioning," "Reading Julian Is a Mermaid with Drag Queen Story Hour," "Drag Queen Makeup Transformation," "It's Okay to be Gay Lipsync."

When asked whether the content was age-appropriate for children, a YouTube spokesperson told Fox News Digital, "We have confirmed this content is appropriate for the YouTube Kids app, and our policies were developed with experts to allow children to learn about a broad variety of topics, including age-appropriate educational videos on sexual & gender identity."

YouTube policies allow videos discussing sexual orientation and some sexual education topics. However, the spokesperson noted that parents could block children from viewing specific channels or even pre-select which videos their children can view.

"We know every family is different, which is why we offer a variety of options to help parents better control their experience, including the option to control what content their child can see," the spokesperson added.
