Silencing of voices …
In Thursday's newsletter, I wrote about CNN's chief anti-conservative activist Oliver Darcy's attempts to paint the White House social media summit as a gathering of extremists. Darcy kept that theme up in a recap story at CNN. Media Matters piled on by listing a number of mainstream conservative organizations as "extremist."
Here's Media Matters' list of "extremist figures":
Individuals and organizations that have said they were invited to the summit or have been confirmed to attend include conservative radio host Bill Mitchell, a right-wing meme maker known online as Carpe Donktum, Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, right-wing propaganda YouTube channel Prager University, pro-Trump cartoonist Ben Garrison (whose invitation has since been rescinded), Human Events publisher Will Chamberlain, Media Research Center founder Brent Bozell, conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation, Students for Trump co-founder Ryan Fournier, right-wing personality Ali Akbar (also known as Ali Alexander), discredited "citizen journalist" James O'Keefe, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), right-wing commentator Tim Pool, Turning Point USA Chief Creative Officer Benny Johnson, far-right blog The Gateway Pundit founder Jim Hoft, fringe social media platform Minds.com, conservative singer Joy Villa, anti-abortion activist Lila Rose, and YouTube conspiracy theorist Mark Dice. (Emphasis added.)
Got that? To Media Matters: the Heritage Foundation, the Media Research Center founder, Human Events publisher, and Prager University are considered "extremist." This is exactly the sort of thing that was always going to happen.
The organization also labeled a sitting congressman and female Republican senator as "extremist," as well as investigative journalist James O'Keefe.
People like Darcy rail against "fringe characters," and the intelligentsia of the conservative movement secretly agree with him because they think they are safe. But then Darcy's allies, like Media Matters, publish extensive lists that include mainstream conservative organizations and people.
What's Lila Rose's extremism? That she wants to protect human life?
People like Darcy who want to limit speech they don't like need to be confronted at every step of the way.
