Matthew Walker, a sleep scientist at UC Berkeley, spent four and a half years writing a book about the “catastrophic sleep-loss epidemic” that’s contributing to your risks for diabetes, obesity, heart disease and more. People should be getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night, but our society sees losing sleep as a negotiable thing or even as a mark of status.
