War on Christmas: Civil Rights group is demanding that an elementary school remove its Three Wise Men display

On Friday's show, Pat Gray highlighted a story about residents in Newaygo, Michigan, who are fighting to defend a Christmas tradition that has been a part of their community since the 1940s.

According to WWUP-TV, the Michigan Association of Civil Rights Activists has "demanded" that the elementary school remove its Three Wise Men display after a citizen complained and asked that the display be taken down.

MACRA founder Mitch Kahle claimed that a religious display on a public building is a "clear violation" of the First Amendment.

Pat asserted that the establishment clause of the First Amendment in no way dictates that a Christmas display could be in violation of the U.S. Constitution. Why? Pat explained that unless the government passed a law requiring the school to display Christmas symbols, then no violation has occurred.

What did Newaygo residents have to say?

Many residents see the annual Christmas display as part of the community and are rallying to continue the nearly 80-year tradition.

Resident Amy Postma told reporters, "It is just a symbol of our community, it has always been there, and we love it."

Another Newaygo resident said, "To me it's a little thing, it's Christ's birthday and you celebrate that."

According to WWUP, the school district will issue an official statement soon once a decision to fight MACRA in court or move the display to private land is reached. Watch the video above for more details.
