DEBUNKED: Stu Burguiere takes on the diet-soda-causes-cancer myth

We all know that you can't believe everything you read on the internet, but sometimes we get suckered into a false narrative on the basis of its online popularity. Take, for example, the widely circulated claim that diet soda causes cancer.

Filling in for Glenn Beck this week, Stu Burguiere took on the supposed link between cancer and diet soda or artificial sweeteners.

Stu started with an article in RealFarmacy.com titled, "Diet Soda’s Worst Fear Coming True: Massive Study links Aspartame to Major Problems." After claiming that "aspartame (the main sweetener for diet soda) is one of the most dangerous ingredients used in our food supply, causing seizures and a host of other health issues," the article cites an outside study as the source for its conclusion.

Stu then followed the article's link to site called Natural News, which was started by "apocalyptic Y2K" founder and member of the 'alt-right,' Mike Adams.

"He [Adams] also maintains and curates one of the most magnificent catalogs of conspiracy theories known to man," Stu said, listing an interesting array of Adams-endorsed theories.

Stu went on to say that the study concluded that "there is no significant association between soda intake and risks of NHL (non-Hodgkin lymphoma) and multiple myeloma."

He noted that the study above was "quite old" and quoted a more recent study in The Journal of Nutrition that said, "These findings do not support associations of daily consumption of artificially or sugar-sweetened carbonated beverages, or aspartame, with NHL risk."

"This is the problem with so much of the health information on the internet today," Stu said. "A social media post about cancer links to a website that claims cancer, which links to another horrible website that claims cancer, which links to a scientific study that flatly does not support the claims about cancer, which is then followed up by another scientific study that rules out the cancer."
