Glenn: It's not about what you stand against, but what you stand to lose

We live in a society where most of us are not afraid to speak up about the things we stand against. But what do you stand for?

“You can absolutely be against killers, and Nazis, and terrorists,” Glenn said on the show today. “But if you’re not for the First Amendment, the Second Amendment, and the Fourth Amendment, we will all lose our freedom.”

Glenn gives examples of some of the ways that focusing on opposition, instead of principles such as those spelled out in the Declaration of Independence, can cause us to lose sight of what’s at risk: our civil rights.

“If you’re curious which way this should go, maybe this could be a guide,” said Glenn. “Just the opening phrase of the Declaration of Independence -- what is a self evident truth? The Constitution, just the Bill of Rights, that’s our instruction manual, regardless of the person who’s running for office. Left or right, it doesn’t matter. No matter what the hot issue is, it needs to be compared to the Bill of Rights.”

Would it be worth losing our freedom of speech, if that’s what it takes to silence the outspoken hate groups? Would relinquishing ‘the right of the people to keep and bear arms’ save us all from acts of terrorism and gun violence?

“There are certain things that we hold self evident and we must never turn into a people spurned to action based purely on opposition,” said Glenn,”But that’s what both parties are doing right now.
