Watch: Colonizing Mars is about ‘male entitlement’? Writer compares space race to assault
February 26, 2018
What happened?
NBC News featured an op-ed about the new space race with an unusual take: Elon Musk and others who are trying to take us to space are just going through a male mid-life crisis.
In the piece, Marcie Bianco, editorial and communications manager of the Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University, claimed that the push to colonize Mars is about patriarchal control and masculine insecurity.
Give me some key quotes:
- “These men, particularly Musk, are not only heavily invested in who can get their rocket into space first, but in colonizing Mars. The desire to colonize — to have unquestioned, unchallenged and automatic access to something, to any type of body, and to use it at will — is a patriarchal one.”
- “It is the same instinctual and cultural force that teaches men that everything — and everyone — in their line of vision is theirs for the taking. You know, just like walking up to a woman and grabbing her by the p****.”
- “This 21st century form of imperialism [referring to the space race] is the direct result of men giving up on the planet they have all but destroyed.”
On today’s show, Doc shared this story with Jeffy and wished that he had the kind of power as a man that progressives accuse him of having.
