GOP senator calls Trump's election a 'biblical miracle

Sen. Luther Strange (R-Ala.) says that the election of President Donald Trump was a "biblical miracle."

Strange made the comment Saturday during a GOP candidate forum in Montgomery County, Alabama. The Montgomery County Republican Executive Committee hosted the forum ahead of a special election to fill the Senate seat once occupied by Attorney General Jeff Sessions, AL.com reported.

Ten Republicans and eight Democrats are vying for the job. The general election date is set for Dec.  12.

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R) appointed Strange to fill the Sessions seat until the special election. Sessions was the first U.S. senator to endorse Trump for president during the campaign, and Strange is now asking Alabama voters to fill Sessions' senate seat with another Trump supporter.

But Strange took it one step further: "President Trump is the greatest thing that's happened to this country. I consider it a biblical miracle that he's there," Strange said, AL.com reported.

Strange said that by having someone else in the Senate who agrees with Trump's agenda, Republicans will be able to repeal and replace Obamacare, which he called a "disaster." Strange said that the government's role in health care now goes beyond merely helping the poor.

"We're going to take care of the most vulnerable citizens. But remember what this was intended to do, was to take care of disabled individuals and poor women and children. We have now turned it into a massive entitlement, just one example of the problems facing this country," Strange said.

Rep. Mo Brooks, Alabama state Sen. Trip Pittman, Montgomery doctor Randy Brinson, Pelham doctor James Beretta, Hoover businessman Dom Gentile and Birmingham business consultant Bryan Peeples also participated in the Republican forum on Saturday.

According to AL.com, Brooks won a straw poll taken at the forum. Brinson came in second in the straw poll.
