TV show's graphic sex scene featuring Jesus sends Christians into an uproar
August 25, 2017
The hit AMC show "Preacher" caused many a stomach to churn at its recent episode, which featured a graphic sex scene featuring Jesus Christ.
The show's background
"Preacher," a televised drama in its second season, is a graphic novel adaptation created by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin.
The premise of the show revolves around a drunken modern-day preacher who lives in a town full of sin of every kind, as well as paranormal elements.
The show's latest episode, "Dirty Little Secret," threw Christians into a rage.
The incident that caused an uproar
In the show's most recent opener, "Jesus" can be seen engaging in sexual intercourse with an unidentified woman. Not only is the scene filled with overt sex, the two characters engaging in fornication graphically discuss the sexual event.
Toward the end of the scene, the actor portraying Jesus leaves the woman later in the evening, saying that he has to go do something for his father. Later in the episode, the evening in question was the night beginning Christ's crucifixion.
The shock
Catholic League President Bill Donohue in a statement to Fox News expressed his outrage at the television show and warned that Christians will "rally" against the production should offenses continue in this lurid manner.
“Depicting Jesus in a grotesque sex scene is an assault on the sensibilities of all Christians, as well as people of good will who are not Christians,” Donohue said. “We have been treated to this kind of fare from some pay-per-view channels, but we are not accustomed to AMC getting into the mud. If this is a signal of what it aspires to become, we will rally Christians against it.”
Before the episode's airing, co-creator Rogen tweeted, "Tonight's episode of #Preacher has some stuff I've been excited to bring to life for years and I'm SHOCKED they let us do it. Please watch."

I think #Preacher may have lost me, last night. That was taking things a little too far. Felt really uncomfortable watching. 👎@PreacherAMC

#Preacher would seth rogen mock any religious figure in Islam? Nah. Mocking Christians/Catholics is safer for the showrunners health. https://t.co/JDmiH2Dfkl

Disgusting. Would they make a film about Islam that was that outrageous?
Sinful hypocrites
