Thanks for saving my life': Man marries woman who prevented his suicide

Kevin and Blake Walsh, both 28, will soon celebrate their one-year wedding anniversary — but the couple almost missed out on their "happily ever after."

Kevin told "Inside Edition" that Blake interrupted his suicide attempt 10 years ago.

"I was probably somewhere between 5 to 10 seconds away from taking my own life," he said. “Nobody but her could have spoken a word of reason to me.”

The couple said they met while attending summer camp in Michigan when they were 13 years old.

One day while they were learning archery, Blake told Kevin, “Black is a good color on you.”

“I was like, ‘At least she’s talking to me; she’s the prettiest girl I had ever seen,'" Kevin said.

They remained friends although they lived in different states, talking on the phone and using AOL Instant Messenger. They reconnected at the same camp the following summer, but eventually fell out of touch.

Years later, at 17, Kevin said he fell into depression and became suicidal. He decided he was going to take his own life. He wrote a suicide note and decided to slit his wrists.

Then, he said, he felt his phone vibrate in his pocket, and he answered it.

“I was basically staring down the barrel of my own mortality,” Kevin said. “It was her. We hadn’t talked in a year and the one person I believed I would have opened up to called at that exact moment I had let everything go and was at peak vulnerability.”

Kevin said he admitted to Blake that he was going to commit suicide.

“Literally, all she said in that moment was, ‘What? Don’t do that,’” Kevin said.

Blake said she had previously received a message from Kevin that said “goodbye.”

“I think it’s a true example of a force in the universe intervening and connecting us,” Blake said. “I get goosebumps every single time I talk about it.”

During the call, Blake made Kevin promise to call her the next day. “That kind of hit me weird because I wasn’t expecting to be around tomorrow,” Kevin said.

Kevin decided not to take his own life, and he and Blake stayed in touch, and eventually fell in love.

In 2015, Kevin proposed to Blake, and they were married five months later.

“I love you,” Kevin said he told Blake during the proposal. “Also, thanks for saving my life.”
