Ben Sasse to colleagues: Babies are great and should be allowed in the Senate

The United States Senate recently passed a rules change to allow babies to be brought to the floor, to accommodate new mom Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill. Despite concerns from some senators about the change, Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., thinks this is a great idea.

On Thursday morning, Sasse penned a Facebook post on why he thinks "we're wise to listen to Senator Duckworth on this one."

"First of all, let's just rejoice in the gift of little Maile Pearl. Every life is unspeakably glorious," Sasse wrote.

But, as every sleep-deprived parent will testify, babies turn life upside-down. They fuss. They cry. And, when it’s time to eat, they don’t care what you’re doing. They’re narcissists (they’ll fit right in the Senate).

Parenthood is hard work. But it’s great and beautiful. It completely reshapes how you think about unconditional love. We, as a society, ought to be coming alongside new moms and dads and supporting them as best we can.

For the Senate, that means helping Senator Duckworth be a full-time mom and a full-time public servant.

Sasse acknowledges that this rule won't work everywhere.

Look, this rule wouldn't work in every workplace - infants probably shouldn't follow their moms to construction sites. They shouldn’t ride with Danica Patrick on a NASCAR track. And limiting the request to infants under the age of one is probably wise. (If we let my six-year-old on the Senate floor, every one of us would have miniature footballs rattling off of our foreheads.)

Even if there isn't a one-size fits all policy for every workplace, this one seems clear cut. Let's broadcast, on C-SPAN every day, what a good thing it is for moms to be able to feed their newborns at work.

At the end of the day, he says the Senate made the right call.

"It sends a clear message that babies like Maile Pearl are welcome: in our lives, in our hearts, and on the Senate floor."
