Chicago International Socialist Organization: Socialism is about self-government

The Chicago district chapter of the International Socialist Organization shared a tweet on Sunday, stating those who oppose socialism “oppose the idea that ordinary working class people can govern themselves.”

The tweet, second in a thread presumably meant to educate others about the meaning of socialism, did not back the claim with any evidence of how socialism, which typically promises “free” healthcare, housing, college and high-paying jobs, has freed citizens to care for themselves. (A Washington Post opinions editorial piece Friday, however, did explain the freeing effects of socialism on Venezuela’s economy.)

Because the definition of “self-government” has always meant “the government will take care of everything for you,” right?

Editor's note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly included a tweet by the International Organization for Standardization, which shares an acronym with the International Socialist Organization. We regret the error.
