“Today the United States began the process to withdraw from the Paris Agreement,” Pompeo stated. “Per the terms of the Agreement, the United States submitted formal notification of its withdrawal to the United Nations. The withdrawal will take effect one year from delivery of the notification.”

Congressional Republicans celebrated the move. Ted Cruz praised the administration “for taking steps today to formally withdraw from this job-killing, wage-reducing, economy-crippling Obama-era deal.” House Minority Whip Steve Scalise called the agreement “unworkable and reckless” and said the “unrealistic, liberal policies that make up this agreement hit low-income Americans the hardest by increasing energy costs and killing American jobs.”

Congressional Democrats, naturally, criticized the administration’s announcement. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff tweeted that “history will remember this as one of the most destructive actions of this dangerously destructive president.” Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the move “yet another disastrous anti-science, anti-government decision that sells out our planet and our children’s future.”
