Obama credits the ‘liberal progressive ideal’ for ‘the world’s most prosperous and successful societies’
July 17, 2018
At a lecture celebrating the 100th birthday of former South African President Nelson Mandela, former U.S. President Barack Obama took the opportunity to tell Johannesburg attendees about how progressive economics work.
“[T]he world’s most prosperous and successful societies, the ones with the highest living standards, and the highest levels of satisfaction among their people happen to be those which have most closely approximated the liberal progressive ideal that we talk about,” Obama said.
He did not give any example of a country that had achieved exceptional living standards by embracing progressive government programs.
“Check the history books,” he added.
He also attributed recent improvements in the American economy to “aggressive steps” by his own administration.
