WTF MSM!? Did CNN's Zucker know about Lauer?

WTF MSM!? Did CNN's Zucker know about Lauer?

Societal effect …

Person of the year … Time magazine named its “Person of the Year” this morning. “The silence breakers,” who have come forward with accusations of sexual misconduct against powerful men, are their choice. Incredibly, it is a worthwhile choice. The accusations have resulted in change across vast swaths of society. And Time didn’t include only women; Terry Crews is also profiled.

Police find tapes … For years, Corey Feldman has accused powerful men in the entertainment industry of raping him and Corey Haim. He has repeatedly said that he told the Santa Barbara County sheriff’s office, in 1993, the names of the men he says raped him. The sheriff’s office has repeatedly said it has no record of the conversation. That has changed, and the tapes have been located.

Did CNN’s Zucker know about Lauer? … Yesterday, Fox News reported on a 2008 Friars Club private roast of Matt Lauer, where attendees joked about his sexual prowess and lecherous behavior. Present at that roast was then-head of NBC Jeff Zucker. The now-head of CNN Zucker made jokes about Lauer’s masturbation habits. Zucker’s employee Brian Stelter, CNN’s media critic/cheerleader, often chided Fox News for not reporting on allegations against Roger Ailes and Bill O’Reilly. Now Stelter is silent on this latest bit of news regarding Zucker and Lauer, not mentioning it in his daily media roundup email. Just last week, Zucker denied knowing anything about Lauer during his tenure at NBC.

Speaking of Lauer … His former colleagues at NBC are justifiably worried about covering the upcoming Winter Olympics in South Korea. “Page Six” has the story. The Olympics are being held less than 60 miles from the North Korean border. I’m frankly surprised there has not been more in the media about this. “Page Six” ended its report with what we are all thinking, “Then again, despite the political turmoil on the Korean Peninsula, the absence of Matt Lauer should be a draw.” Ouch.

Media blackouts …

About that Democratic congresswoman … This week, former Democratic Rep. Corrine Brown was sentenced for tax fraud regarding the use of charity funds for private expenses. The Daily Caller reports that CNN and MSNBC have ignored coverage of the sentencing. The DC reported the networks’ only mention, either on air or online, was a short bit in a Maddow Show roundup of the news. If it was a GOP rep, it would have been wall-to-wall coverage. But don’t expect them to admit to the bias.

Secret Ajit man … Yesterday, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai spoke at Verizon’s Washington, D.C., headquarters. Inverse’s Nick Lucchesi reported that Pai’s remarks would be kept secret. Except they weren’t, as Pai aide Nathan Leamer noted on Twitter. The FCC released the full transcript of Pai’s prepared remarks. Just another bit of #FakeNews.

They just don’t get it … There has been a cascade of reports about the partisan leanings of key Justice Department and FBI officials over the past week. Fox’s Tucker Carlson made note of this and how it is a danger to democracy. That’s when NBC’s Chuck Todd leapt into action on Twitter, not to concur, but to attack Carlson for using the term “secret police.” It’s as if Todd doesn’t actually believe that the reports about partisan activity in the criminal justice system are concerning. But the media isn’t biased.
