WTF MSM!? The media treated Reagan the same way

WTF MSM!? The media treated Reagan the same way

Dangerous words …

Reactions to nuclear button tweet? … The media has been quick to paint Donald Trump’s tweet regarding the size of his nuclear button as unhinged and dangerous. The reaction has been swift and altogether expected. Here’s a roundup of some of the initial tweets from the professional Left and media types in response to Trump’s tweet.

Echoes of Reagan … On his radio program last night, LevinTV host Mark Levin compared the Trump tweet about the nuclear button to President Reagan’s open-mic wisecrack about the Soviet Union during the taping of a radio broadcast. Reagan said, “I’m pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.” Levin explained how the two statements were meant to warn the nation’s adversaries.

Contemporary reaction to Reagan … In 1984, New York Times reporter Hedrick Smith wrote a supposed straight news story titled, “Reagan’s Gaffe.” When reading this article, one gets a feeling of déjà vu. The attacks against Reagan are almost word for word the exact sentiments being launched at Trump. If you want to see how the media has not really changed in how they go after a Republican president, this piece is well worth a read. The only thing different about today is that Twitter amplifies more quickly the voices of those discontented with the president and makes it harder for journalists to keep their actual biases to themselves.

The book …

The “tell all” … Journalist Michael Wolff is on the cusp of releasing a book drafted from observations and interviews while he had access to the first year of Trump’s White House. The first excerpts of the book leaked yesterday and involved disparaging comments Wolff says former presidential adviser Steve Bannon made about members of Trump’s family. Trump quickly hit back in a fiery statement. On Thursday morning, Trump’s personal lawyers sent a cease-and-desist letter to both Wolff and his publisher in an effort to stop publication of the book Trump’s team says contains multiple inaccuracies. The Trump team also sent a cease-and-desist letter to Bannon.

Credibility at stake … While many in the media have cheered the news of this book, some have taken a more measured approach and are warning people to take what Wolff writes with a grain of salt. Washington Post media reporter Paul Farhi has a lengthy piece outlining some of the credibility issues Wolff has faced in the past. This article serves as a warning to other news outlets to watch out when reporting on the book.

Thiel News Network? … Last night, The Verge reported that Silicon Valley billionaire and staunch libertarian Peter Thiel has been in talks to start a rival network to Fox News. The story outlines how he was talking to Roger Ailes before his death and to the Mercer family about the network.
