A day after Republican Christine O'Donnell won the nomination to face Democrat Chris Coons in the Delaware race for the U.S. Senate, Majority Leader Harry Reid predicted Coons would sail to victory in the November general election. Reid went so far as to predict Coons would've been victorious even if the GOP had nominated Mike Castle. Reid boasted:
"I'm going to be very honest with you — Chris Coons, everybody knows him in the Democratic caucus. He's my pet. He's my favorite candidate," Reid said.
"I've always thought Chris Coons is going to win. I told him that and I tried to get him to run. I'm glad he's running. I just think the world of him. He's my pet."
Alternative O'Donnell campaign slogan: "Christine O'Donnell -- NOT Harry Reid's pet"
