Libyan Rebels Claim Rape, Torture Were Captured on Gadhafi Loyalists' Cell Phones

Rape as a tool of war.

Rape as a tool of war? This is becoming a reality in Libya.

According to rebels, soldiers loyal to Gadhafi have used sexual assault and torture as weapons against women in the nation's ongoing war. Journalists have suspected for some time that rape may be a "tool" employed by military officers, but the most recent revelations coming out of the tattered nation are numbing.

The rebels report that Libyan soldiers have been using cell phones to capture their heinous crimes. The following CNN report discusses these revelations, while including a video that allegedly shows a Libyan woman being sexually abused (caution: graphic).

Sadly, rape is such a taboo in Libya that even the rebels are anxious to dispose of the evidence. The embarrassment that would result from the crime being made public would apparently bring too much shame for the women involved. Thus, justice may not be a reality for the victims.
