Jon Stewart Slams Gingrich Response To 'Open Marriage' Question During Debate

"How dare you ask me about something as tawdry as my three somewhat-overlapping marriages."

Coming back from the weekend after the CNN Republican Presidential debate, Jon Stewart ripped into Newt Gingrich for hypocrisy on the issues of marriage and Washington "insider" status that came up during some of its most fiery exchanges.

Stewart thinks that instead of a knockout blow for Gingrich, it should have been a wipeout for CNN's John King because Stewart feels the combative GOP contender has a glass jaw on a host of core issues.

Stewart first focused in on the very beginning of the debate when CNN moderator King asked Gingrich if he wanted to discuss the issue of the highly publicized interview his ex-wife gave several news outlets on the eve of the debate. Gingrich said "no," and then proceeded to eviscerate King and the media in general on national TV in a soundbite that has since gone viral.

“As close to despicable as it can get?" Stewart asked, in reference to Gingrich's opening remarks. Stewart then gave a  convoluted description of Gingrich's marital history, and ended the tirade with:

"You imagined your wife, while she dealing with MS, would be ok with you have sex with a woman who you had already been having sex with for six years. I think you have a pretty good imagination despicability-wise"

Channeling Gingrich's position for a moment, Stewart asked rhetorically "How dare you ask me about something as tawdry as my three somewhat-overlapping marriages."

Stewart also referred to Gingrich as "a career marriage-sanctity sully-er" and said of CNN's King's rejoinder to Gingrich that he "shanked it."

Stewart then turned his attention to the issue of influence-peddling that has become a hot-button issue in the Gingrich camp and came up during exchanges with GOP contender Mitt Romney. As Mediaite described Stewart's words:

"Then there was the whole Freddie Mac deal...Gingrich claimed he had a 'small business' of some sort ('your small business involves selling access to Washington!') ... He wondered if the rise of Gingrich made Republicans happy, only to have a ready-made montage (how do they do that?) of Republicans bickering over the top two candidates.

Perhaps the most biting moment in Stewart's entire monologue was when he said of Gingrich: "you are the washington insider-- when washington gets its prostate checked, it tickles you."
