GOP hopeful Rick Santorum's super PAC is digging in in Illinois with one of its sharpest attacks yet on former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. The Santorum camp hopes that an ad tying Romney to the 2008 bank bailouts and painting his legacy in Massachusetts as "more debt and taxes, less jobs" will help win some delegates when Illinois voters go to the polls on March 20.

The Romney campaign is not taking the attack lying down. Pointing to one fact-checking website, Romney says Santorum's claims are "misleading."
"Rick Santorum’s only experience with budgets is to vote to increase spending, raise the debt ceiling and increase his own pay," Romney communications director Gail Gitcho responded. "Mitt Romney has spent his career balancing budgets, both in private business and in government. As governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney balanced the budget every year he was in office – and left behind a more than $2 billion cash reserve."
