Same-sex couples fight for marriage, forget to ask for divorce rights, too
April 06, 2012
Jessica Port and Virginia Anne Cowan are two women who got married in California just a few years ago before moving to Maryland. Now they want a divorce but that's not an option where they live now.
The couple first requested a dissolution of their marriage and were denied in 2010 by a Maryland judge based on the fact that women’s marriage is not legal in the state.
Fortunately for Port and Cowan, Maryland passed a same-sex marriage bill in late February. They can officially get divorced in January 2013.
Congratulations.
