Below is the introductory essay, "On the Line," from the October 2012 cover feature “What's at Stake.” The feature includes nine pieces analyzing the top issues of this election.

-------------------

The race for the White House will permanently impact our nation on a number of fronts.

We can’t afford to get this one wrong.

***

“The most important election of our lifetimes.”

We’ve all heard that claim in one form or another countless times over the last several months. But is it true? What’s really at stake this election?

The team here at TheBlaze decided to do a little digging on some of the biggest issues that will be impacted by the results we get Nov. 6. Judging by what we’ve found—from the border to the Supreme Court, the economy to Israel and the Middle East, ObamaCare to the First Amendment, and everything in between—this election is looking like make-or-break time for the United States.

Conservatives, for many years, have been lamenting the perpetual expansion of the state. During the reign of President Obama, we’ve seen an explosion in the growth of government—not only in cost (e.g. four straight years of deficits in excess of $1 trillion and a national debt of more than $16 trillion), but also in scope (e.g. ObamaCare and the regulatory state). It can only become worse with a second Obama term.

And the worry isn’t just the size of government, it’s the growing liberal progressive radicalism in Washington and across the nation. The people our president has chosen to surround himself with toe the radical line, seeking to “fundamentally transform” the United States and promote the godless and dangerous agenda of groups like Occupy Wall Street.

But we also believe it’s not too late to fix the problems. This election—for president and Congress—offers Americans the chance to begin to right the ship.

The following pieces are designed to take a look at the most-pressing topics that voters should be concerned about when selecting the next president. And we hope that you’ll not keep all this information to yourself—share this with your neighbors, co-workers, friends and family members.

It’s go time.
