Newark Mayor Cory Booker, of saving a woman from a burning building fame, challenged one of his Twitter followers on Sunday to join him and "live off food stamps and feed a family for a week." The female Twitter user, @MWadeNC, describes herself as a "Daughter of the American Revolution (DAR), fighting against any all forms of socialism/communism."
Interestingly, it was a famous quote by ancient Greek historian Plutarch that ultimately led to the wildly popular mayor's decision to live off food stamps for a week.
"'An imbalance between rich and poor is the oldest and most fatal ailment of all republics' Plutarch ancient Greek historian (c. 46 – 120 CE)," Booker tweeted on Sunday.
That led to this exchange:
Should Booker's offer be officially accepted, the University of Bridgeport, which is holding the “UB SNAP Food Challenge” next month, will possibly "referee" the food stamp challenge during the first week of December.
Booker on Monday confirmed via his official Twitter account that he fully intends to live off food stamps for a week if his challenge is "truly accepted."
