Geraldo Rivera made a huge announcement on his radio show Thursday, declaring that he is "contemplating" running for U.S. Senate in New Jersey against either Democrat Frank Lautenberg or the wildly popular Newark Mayor Cory Booker.

"Fasten your seatbelt," Rivera said, with Judge Andrew Napolitano on the line. "I am and have been in touch with some people in the Republican Party in New Jersey. I am truly contemplating running for Senate."

"Would you back me?" Rivera asked Napolitano.

"Absolutely. I would do everything that I could, consistent with my contract with Fox… to help you get that job," Napolitano said. He added that Rivera is a "rare understander of the nature of human freedom and the role of government in our lives."

"I figure, at my age, if I'm going to do it, I've got to do it," he said, adding that there appears to be no Republicans stepping up to challenge Booker in 2014, should he decide to run.
