Obama's Alleged Anti-Gun Quote Resurfaces: 'I Don't Believe People Should Be Able to Own Guns

"Barack Obama is the most anti-gun president ever."

Economist and author John Lott Jr. makes a shocking claim in his new book, "At the Brink." According to Lott, President Barack Obama once told him that he doesn't believe Americans should have the right to own guns. The stunning statement was purportedly uttered during a conversation the two had at the University of Chicago Law School in the 1990s.

The exact comment, as printed in the book is, "I don't believe people should to be able to own guns." The shocking claim is presented in the third chapter of the book, CNS News reports.

Lott, who worked at the university at the time, uses the text to recall conversations he once had with Obama on the subject of firearms. Additionally, the author explores the president's policies, noting that he didn't perceive the then-professor to be a moderate who was intent on bringing people together.

In the book, Lott recalls first meeting Obama and asking him to go to lunch so that the two could discuss their views on guns. After making the lunch proposal, the president purportedly "grimaced and turned away."

Amid a nationwide debate on guns following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, Obama has publicly stated that he believes the Second Amendment affords citizens the right to bear arms -- but Lott isn't so sure that this is the president's true view on the matter.

"Despite his assurance to Fox News that he understands the Second Amendment, it's a good bet that the positions Obama took on guns during his time at Chicago reveal his true convictions," he writes.

At the end of the chapter, Lott has some dire warnings for readers. According to CNS News, He writes that Obama's statements to him about guns teamed with his record on the matter should cause Americans pause.

"Barack Obama is the most anti-gun president ever," he said. "That claim is based not on my own interactions with him back in the 1990's but on his own public record over many years."

Lott first made the claim about Obama's controversial gun views in a 2012 radio interview with host Laura Ingraham. Listen to it, below.
