'I Think Jesus Is Weeping for Joy' Over Court’s Gay Marriage Rulings: Who Said It?
June 27, 2013
"I don't think Jesus is on the other side of this."
During an appearance on CNN on Wednesday night, commentator Andrew Sullivan spoke out in support of the Supreme Court's decision to strike down a portion of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). In commenting on former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's opposition to same-sex marriage and his belief that "Jesus wept" in the wake of the rulings, Sullivan, instead, said that Christ "is weeping for joy" over the court's historic move.
After discussing Justice Anthony Kennedy, a Catholic who wrote the majority opinion on the United States vs. Windsor (DOMA) decision, Sullivan decried the church's treatment of homosexuality.

"The Catholic hierarchy has been awful, but the Catholic people and the families and friends and people who care as Jesus did about the marginalized and treating them with dignity -- they're happy today," the commentator said. "And Kennedy used that Catholic language to support that moving argument."
From there, Cooper noted a tweet that was sent by Huckabee in the wake of the decision. The former politician wrote, "My thoughts on the SCOTUS ruling that determined that same sex marriage is okay: 'Jesus wept.'"

Naturally, Sullivan disagreed.
"I think Jesus is weeping for joy," he said. "I don't think Jesus is on the other side of this."
Despite making this proclamation, Sullivan also noted that he doesn't claim to know "anything about that" -- a purported attempt to soften the assertion.
"But I do know that Jesus was always on the side of love," he added.
