Police say three black men beat and robbed a white man in Washington, D.C. early Saturday morning yelling, "This is for Trayvon Martin."
The attack is being investigated as a hate crime, The Washington Post reported.
Police told the Post the three men approached the victim from behind while he was walking in the city's Adams Morgan neighborhood at 1:26 a.m. Saturday.
Two of the attackers threw the victim to the ground and kicked him, before all three took his iPhone and wallet and fled.
The victim suffered minor injuries but declined treatment at the scene, CNN reported. No arrests have been made.
“There is no pattern in these types of crimes. These attacks are outrageous; we are doing everything in our power to see that they certainly don’t occur. If they do occur, we are going to aggressively investigate them and bring people to justice,” D.C. police spokesman Araz Alali told the Post.
The incident came two weeks after George Zimmerman was cleared of criminal charges in the shooting death of the Florida teenager.
