Headless body in topless bar' headline writer is out of a gig after four decades
August 16, 2013
It just might be the single greatest or best known newspaper headline in modern history. From the New York Post in 1983:
And now, the man responsible for that bit of bold-type brilliance is out of a job.
According to Capital New York, V.A. Musetto was a victim of recent cutbacks in staff at the New York tabloid. While Musetto has been retired from his headline writing duties for a few years, he was writing movie reviews for the paper. At least, that was until he received this notice via email from his editor:
"Dear Vincent, I'm sorry, but because of budget cutbacks we cannot give you any further reviewing assignments. Your review of THE GRANDMASTER next week is your final assignment."
Mr. Musetto turned the email around, forwarding it back to many at the Post, with the lead in,"after 40 years at post, during which I wrote 'Headless Body in Topless Bar,' it has come to this."
If you are curious about the gruesome crime associated with the clever headline, NPR has an overview of the case as well as an update on the violent criminal who committed the brutal crimes.
