Billy Eugene Wilson, 56, was indicted after the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation looked into the missing funds. The TBI indicted Wilson on one count of official misconduct and one count of theft, WKRN.com reports.

The mayor of Greenbrier, Tenn., allegedly used the money to pay for personal expenses, according to the TBI.

“Wilson perpetrated the theft through his position as mayor, volunteer fire chief and founder of Greenbrier Toys for Tots,” WKRN.com notes.

There is currently an ongoing investigation into whether he also pilfered funds from the city.

He was booked on a $5,000 bail and has since been released.

"We have a great system set up, we have a great city recorder, police chief everything is great. Like I said, we have a contingency plan we just put that into effect and Mayor Wilson is still the mayor of the city. Until that point when he comes back we're just operating under this plan until he gets back," Greenbrier Superintendent Tommy Maitland said.
