Goes Ballistic' Is a Bit of an Internet Cliche But it Actually Fits This Clip of a Dem Congressman's Meltdown
December 05, 2013
"I want you, Madam Speaker, to address the reason that they are here! They are here because our government is tearing apart their families, Madam Speaker!"
Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) took to the floor of the House of Representatives Wednesday to issue a scorching attack on Republicans for supposedly stalling immigration reform.
Polis’ meltdown came after Rep. Joe Garcia (D-Fla.) used his time to acknowledge supporters of immigration reform who were sitting above the chamber, prompting the presiding officer, Rep. Jackie Walorski (R-Ind.), to issue a standard warning that House members are not to address the gallery, The Hill reported.
That’s when Polis lost it.
"Madam Speaker, the gentle people in the gallery … would not have to be in the gallery … advocating if this House simply took up the bill," he began. "Do you think they want to be spending their time here, Madam Speaker? Is that what you think?"
"And you're saying we're addressing them, and that's what you're upset about Madam Speaker?" he continued, raising his voice to a scream. "I want you, Madam Speaker, to address the reason that they are here! They are here because our government is tearing apart their families, Madam Speaker!"
Walorski again reminded Democratic lawmakers that they are not to address members of the gallery.
“I want the speaker to understand that the speaker is obstructing H.R. 15 from coming to the floor!" Polis shouted back.
