Elderly Man Called 911 for Ailing Wife — Why He's Now Considering Pressing Charges

An elderly man is considering suing a Missouri police department after he says officers assaulted him when he called for an ambulance to aid his ailing wife.

Elbert Breshears told KSPR-TV he dialed 911 for his wife who suffers from dementia.

"The wife and I were standing about here, that's the window she knocked out. I was standing here holding her hand and she was wavering hollering help," Breshears said.

Humansville police were first to respond to the scene.

According to Breshears, a "police car drove up" and an officer "bailed out ran over and knocked me down."

"He told me to get up, I told him I couldn't," Breshears told KSPR.

That's when things took a sudden turn.

"First thing, I know they grab me, threw me out there on the gravel. One of them sat down on my back, the other sat down on my head. They were trying to get handcuffs on me. I told them I can't get my hands up. I have no objection to being handcuffed," Breshears said.

Paramedics soon arrived at the seen and took he and his wife to the hospital. A doctor there examined his injuries.

"He dug out the gravel out of my head and sewed my head up," Breshears said.

Police told KSPR that Breshears faces three charges: abuse of the elderly, resisting arrest and assault on a police officer.

Breshears adamantly denies those accusations.

"I don't hit my wife. I've lived with the woman for 47 years. I love the woman. I can't help what she does," Breshears said.

"All I was trying to do was my job and this is what I got for it," he added.

A spokesperson for the Humansville police department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from TheBlaze.

According to KSPR, Breshears' wife is in the hands of professional care. Breshears is currently looking for a lawyer to possibly press charges against the police department.
