Nancy Pelosi Invokes America's Founders in College Graduation Speech — Where It All Happened Should Be No Surprise
May 17, 2014
“Now, it’s all about you..."
Left off the list of commencement speakers disinvited from graduation ceremonies this spring, a smiling Nancy Pelosi on Saturday addressed graduates of the University of California, Berkeley and seemed to speak their language.
"Our founders were successful disruptors of...the status quo," the Democratic House minority leader said in her prepared remarks. “Being called a disruptor in my view is a very high compliment. You here at Berkeley are already disruptors in many ways.”
Pelosi, who hails from the northern California region where she gave her speech, recalled Berkeley's history of activism — then told graduates to make some history of their own.
"Think of your possibilities," she added. “Now, it’s all about you — what you can do with your freedom to speak out, with the tools of our time: Instagram and YouTube, Facebook and Twitter."
