Your Eyes Aren't Fooling You, These Puppies Really Were Born Like This

"I couldn't believe it when I first saw them."

A pair of puppies born in Spain aren't just getting looks because of they're cute, but it's their unusual color that's drawing extra attention.

The hunting dog pups breed in Laguna de Duero were born with a green hue last week.

"I couldn't believe it when I first saw them," Aida Vallelado Molina, the dogs' owner, told The Local. "I thought the puppies were dirty and tried to clean them, but the color wouldn't come off."

One of the two dogs died shortly after birth, but a male puppy also born the verdant shade is still alive. He is, however, beginning to lose the strange color, according to the newspaper.

"There are no other recorded cases of this happening in Spanish scientific literature," local veterinarian Daniel Valverde Fernandez told Laguna al Dia, according to an unofficial translation.

There actually was another reported case of a green puppy that later lost its color a couple years ago. This report suggested that the puppy was exposed to biliverdin, a green bile pigment, which can be in the placenta, causing the color.
