Dad Has an Awesome Response to Boys Who Will Want to Marry His Daughter

"I'm doing what a dad should do."

A boyfriend goes to his girlfriend's father to ask for her hand in marriage. The father says no, and the boy calls him rude.

That's the essence of the song "Rude" by the band Magic!

But one real dad has a response to this song. It's "Rude (The Dad's Side of the Story)."

"Seeking permission to marry my princess, son what's wrong with your big head?" Benji Cowart sang. "It's the first time I met you, why would I let you run off with my baby girl?

"Get back in your Pinto. It's time that you go. The answer is no."

"You say you want my daughter for the rest of your life, well you gotta make more than burgers and fries. Get out your momma's basement, go and get you a life. Son, you're 28, don't you think it's time?

"Why you gotta call me rude? I'm doing what a dad should do — keep her from a fool like you," Cowart continued in response to Magic!'s lyrics, which accuse the non-assenting father of being "so rude."

"And if you marry her anyway, you marry that girl, I'm gonna punch your face. You marry that girl, I'll make you go away. You marry that girl, you're in the bottom of a lake," Cowart crooned.

Listen to the whole of Cowart's song with a little accompaniment from his wife as she was passing through doing laundry:

And here's original song if you haven't heard it yet:

Cowart told TheBlaze the inspiration for his satirical response stemmed from liking the tune of the original song itself.

"When I first heard the song — I’m a songwriter professionally — I thought it was an awesome song, really poppy," he said.

"Then I heard the line 'I’m going to marry her anyway,'" which he added gave him pause because he has a daughter himself.

While he thinks that Magic!'s song is tongue-and-cheek as well, he said he started messing around with his own lyrics that used "cliche responses of what any father would say."

After posting the video last week, it has more than 1 million views at the time of this article's posting.

While the messages in his song are funny and might resonate with some, he said he thinks the "normalness of it" might attract people as well.

"We live in normalville just like everybody else," Cowart added.

Cowart is a songwriter in Nashville and wrote the lyrics for a couple of songs that were sung by Christian band Big Daddy Weave, including "Redeemed" and "The Only Name."

"Rude (The Dad's Side of the Story)," Cowart told TheBlaze "was just something to do for fun."

As for his own daughter, Cowart said when she's of the appropriate age — she's still too young to date even — he hopes that he would have "done a good enough job as a dad that she has high standard of how a guy should treat her" and that he would have met the young man before giving his blessing.
