October 13, 2014
"... it is an outdated and horrific tradition which has no place in modern Kazakhstan."
New video published online appears to show a bride kidnapping take place in the country of Kazakhstan where the practice is a widely accepted cultural custom.
The footage, published online by the New York Post, is titled "Stealing the Bride" and reportedly depicts a frightened woman screaming and crying as she is forcibly taken to her future husband.
According to Central European News, taking a woman against her will for marriage is very common in the country.
“Often the families of the victims agree because the groom pays them a lot of money,” women’s rights activist Anfisa Zuyeva told the Post. “But it is an outdated and horrific tradition which has no place in modern Kazakhstan.
“No wonder people think we’re backward and barbaric,” she added.
